Quiet Reigns

Some suffer the blues during the holidays or immediately following...I know I have in the past, especially after the death of my father around Christmas time three years ago. That ache has tempered with time, making it easier to focus on the joy of the season. On the anniversary of his death this year, I called my mom, reminded my brother to call her, and took my family out to dinner. We talked about Dad and his sense of humor, reminiscing about good times we had together, and his impact on our lives. It turned out to be a very positive day.

Now that Christmas and New Year's Eve are past, my house is quiet for a time. Hubby is off puttering around organizing, I am curled on the couch writing, and a soft snow is falling outside. From my vantage point I can see through the living room, through the dining room, out the sliding glass doors, across the back porch and through the bare limbs of one of my apple tree. A slight breeze sends the fluffy flakes diagonally - a constant, consistent, slow, steady flutter. It makes me think of what a lullaby would look like as it rolled by on a player piano scroll.
Perhaps it is playing Auld Lang Syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

As I look forward to each new year, I always keep those in my heart who have gone before.

So, here is a toast...to those we've lost: may their spirits remain in our hearts as we move forward in our lives.

Spread their kindness and love to others this year...I will carry on my father's love of laughter by repeating his jokes and funny sayings, his delight in his grandchildren by telling them how proud he would be of them, his interest in technology by writing about the future, his joy in learning by teaching my students, and his love and respect for his wife by calling her often and flying to see her.

Who are you remembering this new year and how do you let that person's spirit live on through you?

A toast to you and yours!

If you are feeling particularly nostalgic, watch the Kenny G version of Auld Lang Syne on youtube.
