Student Writers

My grandmother always warned me against being too "prideful" when I was little, but I just can't help it today!
: )

In class my 7th grade students shared their original short stories. While they were reading, I was laughing aloud with their clever lines, making faces at some gross parts, and generally loving my job. The assignment was to write a short story from the point of view of a child, focusing on voice & word choice. Each story had to have descriptive passages utilizing imagery and also include dialogue. The working title? "The Monster in My Closet"

Tomorrow the other two groups present their stories. I'm sure their presentations will be just as wonderful. Today the students' pride in their hard work shone on all of their faces when they came forward to read. It was wonderful.

Even though the stories had been peer edited by most of the other students on the draft or later in the computer lab using the comment feature on Word, the entire class focused on their friends as they presented.

Now, however, it is time to work on my own story...in the hopes someday my writing will touch others in the same way my students touched me today with their writing.
