The Wild Blue Yonder

Are we there yet?

We weren't allowed to ask that when we traveled. As Air Force brats, I guess we were always on our way to someplace else, so were always on the go and destinations were merely pauses.

Most summers of my life were spent in my parent's home state of West Virginia, so we'd drive from wherever we were stationed at the time: Nebraska, Florida, New Hampshire, New York.  (We couldn't quite make it when we lived in England.) The year my father was in Vietnam, I actually lived in the town in which my parents attended middle and high school.

While sitting at the airport WAY TOO EARLY this morning (I had to leave the house by 4:20 am), I marveled at my speedy mode of travel. What would have taken about 16 hours and involve an overnight stay in a hotel was transformed into about two hours and forty-five minutes of actual flight time. If I include the wait time at the airport and transportation to and fro, I still was four times faster!

So here's an early-morning-where's-my-coffee toast to flying! It was a great visit with my mom and I'm looking forward to seeing my students in the morning...
